TAPIJNS MOOISTE – CHERCHEZ LA FEMME

Internationale Vrouwendag staat elk jaar op 8 maart in het teken van strijdbaarheid en het gevoel van solidariteit van vrouwen overal ter wereld. In de vitrines brengen wij een ode aan de vrouw: de gevoelige, strijdbare en slimme vrouw. In de spotlight staan vrouwen uit de wetenschap die de wereld hebben veranderd en de zachtaardige kunstzinnige geisha’s en Chinese dames op porselein.

Martia Versteeg, initiatiefneemster van de Tapijntuin, presenteert zelfgemaakte porseleinen vrouwelijke creaties. Ook is er aandacht voor de kwetsbaarheid van de vrouw. Dit wordt gesymboliseerd in het verhaal over de kemphanen en kemphennen.

Verhalen in 4 vitrines van Brasserie Tapijn. De vitrines zijn ingericht door Centre Céramique, Natuurhistorisch Museum, Tapijntuin en Universiteit Maastricht.

THE BEST OF TAPIJN – CHERCHEZ LA FEMME

Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day comes around: a day on which to reflect on women with a fighting spirit and solidarity among women all over the world. Our showcases pay a special tribute to womankind: sensitive, assertive, and smart women. The exhibit shines a spotlight on women in science who have changed the world, and mild-mannered, artistic geishas and Chinese ladies painted on porcelain.

Martia Versteeg, the initiative-taker behind the Tapijn Garden, presents her porcelain female creations. The vulnerability of women is another topic addressed by this exhibit, and which is symbolized by the story about the fighting ruffs and reeves.

Kemphanen, kemphennen, en…

Vroeger leek alles simpel. Mannen waren de haantjes die indruk maakten op dames. Een goede matpartij was de gelegenheid om de dames te laten zien wie de sterkste was. Maar niet alle heren staan hun mannetje. Sterker nog, als de tegenstander ziet dat je niet zo sterk bent, word je het doelwit. Zo ook bij de kemphanen. Kemphanen die niet fysiek zijn ingesteld, zien eruit als dames. Als ze dan tussen de dames rond de arena lopen, grijpen ze hun kans. Niemand ziet dat het geen dames zijn, maar om ze heren te noemen…

Ruffs, reeves, and…

In the old days everything appeared simple. Cocky males always try to impress the ladies. A good gentlemen’s brawl was an excellent opportunity to impress the ladies. Still, not all gentlemen stand their ground. Even worse, you run the risk of being targeted if they note you might not be that strong. And so is it with ruffs as well. Ruffs who are not physically set look like ladies. When they find themselves among the ladies around the arena, they grab their chances for a short fling. No-one can see they are no ladies but that does not mean they are gentlemen…
