Information
for schools
![[small professor]](afb/jongond.jpg) |
The Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht has a wide range of activities for primary and secondary schools alike. Any working week in southern Limburg should include a visit to the museum! Teachers can of course plan a museum visit themselves, but the museum staff will be pleased to make suggestions for making the visit as fruitful as possible. By mutual arrangement, a choice can be made from the following: personal
introduction, multimedia presentation, practical session, conducted
tour, activity sheets, a coffee/tea or soft drink break. All of these arrangements need to be made well in advance. Telephone: 043 350 5490, fax: 043 350 5475, e-mail

Personal
introduction
A brief introduction by one of the staff members raises the pupils' attention. In about 15 minutes the museum is outlined, addressing such questions as 'What is a museum?', 'What are fossils?' and 'Why was the discovery of the Mosasaurus in 1770 so important?'.
By mutual arrangement, other themes can also be discussed. The introductions are always interactive, with questions and answers forming an essential element.

Multimedia
presentation
In wide-screen projection with surround-sound southern Limburg's history
is shown. Under the title 'Graven naar het Verleden' (= Digging for the
Past), changes during the past three hundred million years are summarised
in 15 minutes. A good introduction to a museum visit with work sheets
or to a practical session.

Practical
session
In the Netherlands only in southern Limburg does 'mergel' come to the surface. The 'mergel' practical session of the Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht offers a unique opportunity to find answers to the question of what mergel is and how it originated. By handling 'mergel' (pre-prepared by the museum), examining it under microscopes and under expert supervision, the pupils themselves look for answers. They are allowed to take the fossils found home!

Conducted
tour
For parties of a maximum of 20 people conducted tours can be booked.
By mutual arrangement, various themes may be agreed upon.

Activity
sheets
Of course, you may visit the exhibits informally: they contain lots of information.
For schoolchildren, though, it is more inviting to be 'led' through the museum. This can be done with the help of magnificently designed activity sheets, of which there are now 40 in all, each focusing on one particular aspect of the exhibits. By selecting one of these, teachers can pick their own theme.

Break
By mutual arrangement, a break with coffee/tea or soft drinks can be added
to the programme. For primary school kids this is a real treat and for
secondary pupils a welcome moment of rest. For such a break the museum
café is the place.
