[entrance near Bemelen]
Scattered across the southern Limburg countryside you will find entrances to caves.
These caves are not natural, though, but the remains of underground caves where building stone has been extracted down the centuries.
a thick sequence of limestone known locally as 'mergel', used to build houses, farms and castles.

Most of the entrances to the caves are found in valley slopes, where the 'mergel' crops out.
