Belvédère gravel

[Woolly mammoth and woolly rhinoceros]

The 8 metre thick gravel sequence seen in the quarry was deposited during an ice age. During the spring, the Maas was a wild river fed by melt water, and left behind rocks originating from the Ardennes. Southern Limburg was then a tundra. The gravels have yielded remains of Woolly mammoth, red deer, horses and woolly rhinoceros.
