The Belvédère hunters

[reconstruction Belvedere (Bonnefanten)]

The oldest traces of human habitation in southern Limburg have been dated to about 250.000 years ago. This makes them the oldest traces in the Netherlands ! In the Belvédère quarry, on the northern outskirts of Maastricht, pieces of charcoal, flint tools and fragments of ochre have been collected by archeologists. These turned out to be the silent witnesses of camp sites of the wandering hunters.
(The reconstruction shown in the image is on display at Maastricht ’s Bonnefanten Museum )
