Pond tortoises

[Emys orbicularis (tortoise)]

The discovery of pond tortoise fossils allow us to deduce that the mean summer tempera-ture must have been at least 18 °C. Pond tortoises lay their eggs in pits dug in sand. The warmth of the sun then hatches the eggs. At low temperatures pond tortoises cannot reproduce.
