Romans in Maastricht
The foundations of present-day Maastricht were laid by the Romans. In the fourth century AD a small fortification was built around the only bridge across the river. Numerous excavations have allowed a reconstruction of this settlement and the surrounding area. In the museum a beautiful model (scale 1:200) is displayed which provides a unique view of Maastricht during the late Roman period (350-450 AD).
