Warm intervals

[reconstruction landscape Tiglian]

One of the warmest periods of the Quaternary is known as the Tiglian (2.2-1.7 million years ago), a period named after the north Limburg village of Tegelen. Many thousands of years on end the climate was equable. From the clay layers that formed remains of animals have been collected, which are now found only in subtropical regions. In the Tegelen Clay remains of e.g. pond tortoises, two species of beaver, various species of deer, a species of rhinoceros, a bear and a hyena have been collected. Also remarkable are the remains of a monkey, not previously found this far north.
