Fishes

[Anomoeodus subclavatus (vis)]

When it comes to fish, and rays and sharks in particular, the only remains found in the Maastricht chalk are teeth and, occasionally, vertebrae. Ray and shark skeletons consist of cartilage, which decays rapidly and fossilises poorly. One of the best-known fish is the parrot fish Anomoeodus subclavatus.
