One group of shells, or bivalves, very common in the Maastricht Chalks are oysters. Even today oysters are found in the sea as well as on our plates. One unusual species of oyster is Agerostrea, with its typical denticulate margin; it is sometimes referred to as 'false teeth'. Other peculiar shells are Trigonia, with its ornamental ‘tubercle’, and the various species of scallop.
