Ferns

[fossil fern][Fern nowadays]
In the extensive Carboniferous forests grew numerous species of fern, some of which closely resembled modern species. Particularly conspicuous, in addition to the many smaller species, were the tree ferns: giants reaching up to 18 m in height with leaves of up to 3 m in length. The best-known species was Neuropteris gigantea.
