Sigillaria and Lepidodendron

[fossil Sigillaria] Lepidodendron, a tree reaching almost 45 m in height, had a branched top and leaves of up to a metre in length.
[fossil Lepidodendron] Sigillaria, shaped like an unbranched, almost 30 m long stem, had a large bunch of leaves and cones at the top.

Both species show a characteristic pattern of leaf scars on their stems. They both belong to the group of club or staghorn mosses, reproducing by means of vast numbers of spores from cones which developed into adult trees. The male cones each contained up to 8 billion spores. The female spores were generally larger, but fewer in number.
