Geology / Paleontology
Because of its geographic position right in the centre of the so-called
'Mergelland' of Netherlands and Belgium Limburg, it is no surprise that
the collections centre on fossils from the Late
Cretaceous, the Maastrichtian (71.3-65.4 Ma), the type area of which
is, as it were, on the museum's doorstep. This collection is one of Europe's
largest and most important collections. On account of its diversity and
completeness (in parts) the petrological collection
is of prime importance as well. Finally the collection of fossils of the
Tegelen Clay is of international importance.
