Activity
sheets
Of course, you may visit the exhibits informally: they contain lots of
information.
For schoolchildren, though, it is more inviting to be 'led' through the museum.
This may be done with the help of activity sheets, of a splendid layout,
of which so far 40 have been completed. Each activity sheet focuses on
one particular aspect of the exhibits.
This can be done with the help of magnificently designed activity sheets, of which there are now 40 in all, each focusing on one particular aspect of the exhibits. By selecting one of these, teachers can pick their own theme. So far, two have been worked out in particular detail: 'Voltooid Verleden Tijd?' [Past Perfect Tense?]
and 'Vivat Mosasaurus'. We are now working on the theme
'Geur en Kleur' [Smell and colour].

Voltooid Verleden Tijd?[Past Perfect Tense?]
This activity sheet takes the children to all corners of the museum. The
main themes are 'time' and 'change'. In groups of 4-6, they take 'a trip
through time', from the Carboniferous Period, via the Cretaceous, the Ice Ages and the first humans in southern Limburg to the origin of the city of Maastricht as a Roman settlement on the River Maas. In the meantime,
they need to come up with answers to questions, and carry out assignments.
In this way, pupils (and teachers alike!) experience that the earth has changed continually through the ages and that these changes are still taking place!
Luckily, they do so at a leisurely pace, with the exception of earthquakes
and volcanic eruptions .....
Level: from group 7/8 to mavo 3

Vivat Mosasaurus
This session might head off with a personal introduction by one of the
museum's curators (who is he/she and what does such a profession boil
down to?, will of course be highlighted). A short video presentation may
be part of such an introduction. In this, it is explained why the find
of a skull of a mosasaur in 1770 was so important and why it took such
a long time before people knew what kind of animal produced such bones.
The pupils/teachers will then, activity sheets in hand, look for answers
to questions such as 'What is a mosasaur?', 'What did such an animal look
like?', 'where and when did mosasaurs live?' and 'What did the area look
like at that time?'.
Level: from groep 7/8 to vwo 6.
